Educational Methods for Learning a Language

Individual Tailoring

At inlingua Edinburgh, students are our number one concern. Understanding and meeting our students’ needs is of primary importance and is at the heart of our teaching methodology.

When it comes to gaining a solid grounding in a foreign language, it is a well-established fact that students need a balanced syllabus. This entails focusing on all four key language skills: the receptive skills of reading and listening, as well as the productive skills of writing and speaking. Some students appreciate this approach to learning a language and embrace tasks that involve extensive reading and extended pieces of writing. However, many students prefer to focus on oral communication and wish only to improve their speaking and listening.

Teaching Materials

At inlingua Edinburgh, we draw on a wide variety of high quality teaching materials and resources. We can meet the needs of students who require a balanced syllabus as well as those who might prefer to focus exclusively on communicating orally in English. Classes are often taught using the highly-regarded inlingua course books. These come in two formats. GPP (General Purpose Programme) for learning general English and APP (Accelerated Professional Programme) for learning business English.

The inlingua Method

The inlingua method focuses on improving the students' speaking skills with emphasis on communication as opposed to lengthy grammatical explanations and tests. Sometimes, a student may request a grammar-focused lesson, and this can be facilitated. However, the onus is on using the language in as natural a way as possible. If you want to learn more about the inlingua method, follow this link.
