Who can take this course?
This course is designed for educators specialising in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) who wish to enhance and refresh their skills in delivering subject content in English. It is aimed at those who teach a subject such as science, history or geography using English as a foreign language. The programme also includes a General English component to allow teachers to improve their fluency in English as well as an introduction to Scottish culture.
Course Description
The course consists of two main components plus an extensive Scottish culture programme:
The CLIL Training component will look at the principles of CLIL, maximising and optimising the use of English in the classroom, how to activate vocabulary and encourage reading and writing. It will also concentrate on English phonology and pronunciation as well as using technology in the classroom. The course is practical and interactive, being task-based with individual, pair and group work. It is based on an adaptable teaching approach, promoting flexibility and the prioritising of individual students’ needs. The course involves linguistic competence as well as subject awareness, with practical feedback from the trainers. Participants are evaluated by continuous assessment and can give their own feedback on the quality of the training. We will provide a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.
The General English component concentrates on speaking and listening skills as well as fluency in the Spoken Performance sessions. Participants should have at least an intermediate B1 level in English.
Our Scottish Culture component includes an introduction to Edinburgh and the Scottish arts as well as the Edinburgh Festival (for courses taking place in August). Activities can include a tour of Edinburgh, ceilidh (traditional Scottish dancing), whisky tasting, theatre, music concerts and excursions to historical landmarks and points of interest (the selection of activities varies depending on the time of year and availability).
** The Erasmus + CLIL course duration is one week. If you would like to undertake the training for two weeks, we recommend combining this course with one week for our Enhanced English Skills course.
