A fly in the ointment

British people love using a lot of expressions and idioms. If you want to say that someone or something spoils a situation which could have been successful or pleasant, you can say “a fly in the ointment”. For example: I was looking forward to my day in Glasgow but the rail strike was a real fly in the ointment.
